Westfield FFA Cup Week 2 Review

Another dramatic night in the Westfield FFA Cup has seen Hyundai A-League duo Adelaide United and Perth Glory, plus second tier Victorian club St Albans Saints and sole ACT entrants Tuggeranong United progress through to the Round of 16.

It was a night for away teams as three of the four matches were won by the clubs away from home, Adelaide United the only side to triumph in their home State.

A brace from new signing Andy Keogh and superb performance between the posts from goalkeeper Danny Vukovic helped Perth Glory defeat the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at Magic Park in Broadmeadow.

In the other all-Hyundai A-League encounter, a solitary goal from Spanish striker Sergio Cirio was enough for Adelaide United to get past the Phoenix at Marden Sports Complex, young goalkeeper Paul Izzo also a key figure in sending the Reds through and ending the New Zealand club’s run.

St Albans joined South Springvale as the second Victorian club to progress thanks to a 1-0 win over Parramatta FC at Melita Stadium, Irishman Barry Devlin’s stunning long range effort proving the difference.

Finally, NPL Capital Football club Tuggeranong United won a thriller over South Hobart in Tasmania, the match decided in a penalty shootout after the sides could not be separated after 120 minutes. South Hobart appeared to be on their way to the last 16 courtesy of a 69th minute own goal but super substitute Zach Munster equalised with five minutes of regulation time remaining.

The Round of 32 continues next Tuesday (12 August 2014) with another four matches, including the all-Hyundai A-League encounter between Melbourne City and Sydney FC in Ballarat.
