Melbourne City FC can to announce goalkeeper Brianna Davey has joined the Club ahead of the Westfield W-League 2015/16 season.
One of the country’s most talented shot-stoppers, the 20-year-old follows inaugural player Lisa De Vanna and Matildas defender Laura Alleway in joining Melbourne City FC ahead of the Club’s maiden campaign.
Davey first broke into the W-League during the 2010/11 season at just 15 years of age, as a back-up to Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Hudson.
Playing three games in her first season, Davey’s performances and immense potential saw her instilled as the first choice goalkeeper, with the young custodian proving her worth with a series of impressive displays during the 2011/12 season.
A stint in Europe was to follow when Davey signed for Swedish club Linkoping FC in 2013 as an injury replacement for Swedish international Sofia Lundgren.
Davey has made 17 appearances for the Matildas since making her debut during a 4-0 win against Tahiti in 2012 as a 16-year-old and is earmarked for a successful international career between the posts.
Despite progressing through Australia’s national teams at under-17s, under-20s and senior level, Davey’s talents are not only confined to association football, with the goalkeeper showing her cross-code capabilities in the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) for the Western Bulldogs.
Melbourne City FC W-League coach Joe Montemurro said the addition of Davey establishes an important spine to the Club’s embryonic squad, which now consists of three key players – Lisa De Vanna (striker), Laura Alleway (defender) and Davey.
“We are delighted to have a goalkeeper of Brianna’s quality join Melbourne City FC,” Montemurro said.
“She’s an excellent young keeper and with Lisa and Laura in the squad we already have some quality players in key positions, so it is very exciting for us.”
Davey is looking forward to re-uniting with former coach Montemurro and is excited to begin preparations for the Club’s maiden campaign.
“I had a really good relationship with Joe last season and I think coming to the Club already makes me feel comfortable because we already have that bond, so I’m really excited to work with him again,” Davey said.
“The players that we have coming in are going to be of the highest quality and that is going to build a great team. I can’t wait to be involved and get started.”
