The Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 sees Perth Glory FC take on Lions FC in Brisbane.
A tricky assignment awaits the Glory when they take on the reigning Brisbane Premier League champions in Round 16 of the Westfield FFA Cup at Perry Park. The Richlands-side from Brisbane’s South-West upset Croydon Kings in the first round of the competition with a 2-1 victory over the 4th placed PS4 NPL South Australia side, with goals coming from Shoheel Khan and Andre Bonotto.
Player-coach Warren Moon was thrilled to be taking on a Hyundai A-League opponent in Perth Glory.
“We’re certainly looking forward to playing a Hyundai A-League side,” Moon said. “It’s going to be a huge challenge for our boys to try to get a result.”
Perth Glory will also enter the match full of confidence, after grinding out a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over fellow Hyundai A-League side Newcastle Jets, following a 2-2 draw at full time. Sidnei Sciola equalised late in regular time, before Nebojsa Marinkovic scored from the penalty spot in extra time. Eventually, it came down to goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson making three saves from the penalty spot to put Glory through to the next round.
Head Coach Kenny Lowe was pleased by his youngsters on the day.
“We’ve got Jakey Collard, young Steph Valentini who came on and got us the penalty and Hagi Gligor came on and did really, really well so really happy for the kids,” Lowe said.
“It’s (The Westfield FFA Cup) massive for us, it sets us up for the season. Our focus is to hang in there for as long as we can.”
Glory will also take heart from their performances against Federation teams in the previous edition of the Westfield FFA Cup; beating Victorian PS4 NPL sides St. Albans Saints and Bentleigh Greens 4-1 and 3-0 respectively.
It promises to be an intriguing match at Perry Park as Glory look to make their second consecutive Westfield FFA Cup quarter-final.
