Westfield FFA Cup 2016 Round of 32 – Match Day 4 Review

Sydney FC, Perth Glory, Devonport Strikers and Melbourne Knights became the final four clubs to progress to the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 last night as wet and wild weather hit the final match day of the Round of 32.

Devonport Strikers became the first Tasmanian club to reach the last 16 in the competition’s history when they outlasted Lambton Jaffas 1-0 in conditions not for the faint hearted at Valley Road in Devonport.

A 6th minute Jesse Dance goal proved the difference while Devonport goalkeeper Nikolas Giantsopoulos was impenetrable between the posts as Lambton threw everything at the home side in search of an equaliser.

In similar conditions at Knights Stadium, Melbourne Knights also made their way into the Round of 16 for the first time as they accounted for Cockburn City from Western Australia.

Cockburn City’s David Araya cancelled out Jacob Colosimo’s opener on the stroke of half time before Stipo Andrijasevic struck the winner in the 70th minute.

Over 8,000 fans at WIN Stadium saw Sydney FC prevail in the highly anticipated match against the Wollongong Wolves in perfect conditions, a Matt Simon brace and a late goal from David Carney securing the Sky Blues a 3-0 win.

Perth Glory continued its love affair with the Westfield FFA Cup, the runners up from the last two years accounting for Brisbane Roar FC 2-0 at Ballymore Stadium.

Two headed goals from defender Dino Djulbic in the opening 20 minutes ensured Perth Glory kicked off their Westfield FFA Cup in ideal fashion.

The Round of 16 draw was also conducted at the conclusion of last night’s matches on FOX SPORTS.

Matchups for the Round of 16 include an all-Hyundai A-League encounter between Perth Glory and Sydney FC, Canberra Olympic hosting Redlands United, Devonport Strikers up against Bentleigh Greens, Blacktown City taking on Bonnyrigg White Eagles, and Melbourne Knights to face Green Gully.

The three matches featuring Member Federation clubs against Hyundai A-League clubs will see Brisbane Strikers host Melbourne City FC, Edgeworth Eagles take on Western Sydney Wanderers FC, and a repeat of last year’s semi final with Hume City drawn to face reigning Cup holders Melbourne Victory.

Dates, venues and kick-off times for the Round of 16 will be released in the coming days.
