Adelaide United look ahead to Remembrance Day fixture

For the first time since 2012, the Reds will play during Remembrance Round on Remembrance Day itself, this Friday 11th November against Brisbane Roar.

The club developed the tradition of commemorating the event in 2011, in partnership with the RSL of South Australia and the Australian Defence Force (ADF), using the event to promote and support the Poppy Appeal.

As in previous fixtures, there will be a pre-match ceremony including the reading of the Ode of Remembrance, singing of the national anthem, bugle renditions of the Last Post and Rouse, as well as a moment of silence.

Chief Executive Officer of RSL SA/NT, Julia Langrehr, highlighted that “Remembrance Day is about finding a minute to reflect on our past and remember all the men and women who have served our country. We thank Adelaide United for allocating this time at their game on Friday night, and it is always special to see a full stadium in silence”.

For the first time in this fixture, the players will take the field in a commemorative Remembrance jersey. The shirt features the Poppy in the centre of the chest, along with a lone soldier on the body. HMAS Adelaide is proudly embellished under the collar to pay tribute to the service men and woman of the ship named after our city, which the squad had the privilege of visiting earlier this year.

$20 from every shirt sold will be donated to the Poppy Appeal. The Poppy Appeal raises funds for RSL programs including accommodation for homeless veterans and assistance dogs for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Learn more about the Poppy Appeal here.

After an exclusive Member sale period, following last night’s match, the limited run of 100 jerseys sold out within 24 hours. However, due to extremely high demand, a second run will be produced and fans can pre-order their shirt here.

The special edition jersey carries the embroidered club and championship logos, along with an embroidered silver star above the club crest.

As in previous Remembrance Day games held at Coopers Stadium, the Tomas Dale Medal will be another highlight of the fixture.

Born in 1989, Adelaide-based Private Dale was from the Brisbane-based 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, and was tragically killed in action in Afghanistan during operations with the Australian Defence Force in 2010.

The medal, to be presented by a representative of the Dale family, is on offer for Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar players on Friday night.

The medal recipient will be chosen by the match day referee and his assistants and will go to the player who conducts himself in the most sporting manner during the 90 minute must-win clash for the Reds.
