Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Round of 32 – Match Day 3 Review

The Central Coast Mariners have become the second Hyundai A-League club to fall to a Member Federation club in as many days after Blacktown City claimed their scalp in a five goal thriller on another memorable night in the Westfield FFA Cup.

All up 23 goals were scored across the night’s four Round of 32 matches, eight of which came from Sydney FC in their comfortable 8-0 win over Darwin Rovers. The total goals tally is the most for any match day in the history of the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds.

Joey Gibbs’ second goal of the night in the 82nd minute proved the clincher for Blacktown City as they recorded a famous triumph as the Central Coast Mariners followed Perth Glory out the door after the Western Australians were knocked out by Heidelberg United the previous night.

The 3-2 result also secured Blacktown City $7,500 as part of NAB Golden Goals, an initiative which sees NAB award $2,500 to Member Federation clubs for each goal they score against a Hyundai A-League team.

While Blacktown City celebrated progression to the Round of 16 in consecutive years and being the first Member Federation club to score three goals against Hyundai A-League opposition, it was the second year in succession the Mariners have been knocked out by a Member Federation club after they were beaten by Victorian side Green Gully in last year’s Round of 32.

On the synthetic surface of Lily Homes Stadium, Blacktown jumped out of the blocks as Gibbs and Giorgio Speranza made it 2-0 after 17 minutes before the Mariners clawed their way back thanks to a double from Kwabena Appiah.

But as they did last year when they overran Sydney United 58 FC at the same venue, Blacktown City would be ahead when it counted as the final whistle was met by jubilant scenes.

There was no such fairytale in the Top End as Sydney FC ran riot against the tradies of Darwin Rovers. The hosts, who turned up to the match in a limousine, held the reigning Hyundai A-League Champions out for the first 20 minutes but once Brazilian striker Bobô scored his first of four goals, the floodgates opened.

The final score line is the highest winning margin in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds, eclipsing the previous best of 6-0, while Bobô joined Matt Sim as the only other player to score four goals in a match.

It was also a big night in Queensland for the Piddick brothers, Grae and Adam, as both of their teams went through to the last 16.

Grae Piddick, the Head Coach of Gold Coast City, oversaw his charges’ 3-1 win over a brave Western Knights as chief goal scorer Jarrod Kyle netted a brace for the hosts.

Meanwhile Adam Piddick, who is the Technical Director and a player at Moreton Bay United, watched on as the Round of 32 debutantes outlasted Broadmeadow Magic 4-2 in a thriller in extra time at Wolter Park.

With scores locked 2-2 after 90 minutes, the turning point came when Broadmeadow forward Dino Fajkovic was red carded for a second bookable offence eight minutes into extra time.

Moreton Bay took full advantage, substitutes Paul Mikula and Declan Smith scoring within the space of two minutes to send the home side through to the last 16.

The final four matches in the Round of 32 will be played next Wednesday 9 August.
