The unique contribution made to Australian Football by the late John Warren (MBE, OAM) will be remembered and celebrated tomorrow at the 15th Johnny Warren Golf Classic (JWGC). This very special event will be held at the picturesque Jamberoo Golf Course and coincides with what would have been Johnny Warren’s 75th birthday!

The JWGC is a four player Ambrose event and commences with a ‘shot-gun’ start at 8.30am and concludes around 12pm. Prizes are awarded for best team net score, the best team scratch score, nearest the pin, longest drive and the best drive and pitch. The event is a fundraiser for the Johnny Warren Football Foundation (JWFF), whose vision is: ‘For Australians to embrace football as a pathway to community participation and a vehicle to engage with the world and understand the diversity and opportunities of global citizenry’.
Ross Warren, the Warren Family patriarch and John’s eldest brother said “it is an honour to welcome the football family to Jamberoo in order to remember how much John means to us all and to football in Australia. We have known many of these people all our lives through our involvement in the game and we cannot thank them enough for their continued friendship and support since John passed away in 2004”.

This year, over one hundred golfers have registered including 1956 Olympians Ron Lord, Bill Henderson and Graham McMillan and Australian internationals John Watkiss, Jim Fraser, Ray Baartz, Garry Manuel, Peter Fuzes, Ron Corry, Dennis Yaager, Col Curran, Doug Utjesenovic and Craig Foster.

Following eighteen holes of golf, the players retreat across the road to the ‘19th hole’ and to the home of the Johnny Warren Museum, the Jamberoo Pub for lunch, presentations, interviews and an afternoon catching up with friends and sharing the many interesting stories from their football journeys’.
About Johnny Warren
Johnny Warren, MBE, OAM (17 May 1943 – 6 November 2004) was an Australian football player, coach, administrator, writer and broadcaster. He spent his youth playing club football in Sydney, primarily for Canterbury-Marrickville and St George Budapest.
Johnny made his full international debut for Australia in November 1965 against Cambodia in Phnom Penh and ended up capped by his country 42 times. In 1967 Johnny captained the national team for the first time in a match against New Zealand and went on to captain Australia in 24 internationals. He was a key member of the 1974 Socceroos team, the first Australian football team to reach the World Cup Finals Tournament.
After he retired from playing football, Johnny worked in television, commentating football for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) television networks, appearing on a number of football analysis shows including On the Ball and The World Game. Johnny was known as Captain Socceroo for his passionate work to promote the game in Australia. In 2004 Johnny received the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit which was presented by FIFA President Sepp Blatter. Today, the award for the best player in the A-League is named the Johnny Warren Medal in his honour.
Johnny was seen by many as a visionary, calling for Australia to move to the Asian Football Confederation, the setup of a new league (both of which have happened) and believed in the success of the game as a whole. His words “I Told You So” have been immortalized since his passing.
