Doug was born in Newcastle in 1927. As a junior he played for New Lambton and Police Boys’ Club. He joined Adamstown Rosebuds with whom he made his senior football debut. He later played for Auburn. In 1956 he transferred to Gladesville-Ryde.
He represented NSW a number of times, also Australia in B international matches. He won his Socceroo cap for his one full international match against South Africa in the 1950s. He was widely regarded as one of the best half-backs and defenders of his era.
Doug was also a fine cricketer, representing NSW Country, and played first grade cricket in Sydney. He is survived by his widow, Joan, and their four married children and their families.
